The Domain Name System (DNS) is broken down into a series of groupings or Top Level Domains (TLD's). These TLD's are .com, .net, .info and within Australia, .com.au, .net.au, .org.au
Up until recently there were very tight restrictions on who could register what name is the Australian Namespace. Fortunately this is now much easier and generally, so long as someone else hasn't registered the name, you can!
